Programs are great. Following a well designed program will make sure that you are constantly progressing and that your bases are covered.
Sometimes, however, you just have to listen to your body. Often, you can make adjustments within the framework of your program. If you’re having a crappy day and feeling beat up or if you’re feeling great and someone turned off the gravity–your program should allow you to adjust accordingly.
The VRFC Power Program has this sort of flexibility. If you feel like there are magnets in the gym floor on a particular day, you can just get the minimum reps on your last set and leave. You could even repeat the weight you did the previous time and only get the minimum reps. No big deal. If you feel great–push the last set. Heck, you could even take a little bit bigger jump than normal if you’ve been feeling awesome for a couple workouts in a row.
1/22: Thursday and Friday

Posted by on I’m a bit late on this one. Thursday was Ben’s first training session since last Tuesday, I believe, so he did something a little different to get back on track. It worked well. Jason and I continued our programming as normal.

Posted by on It was just Big J and I tonight, but we made the best of it by getting pretty silly. Getting a pump is fine so long as you’re covering your bases and getting your work done on the main lifts. That’s exactly what we did today.

Posted by on Big J and I celebrated the man from Atlanta’s legacy today with the heaviest squatting of the cycle.
Also, Eric came by to set his deadlift baseline and represent the front row. Benjo was away in enemy territory for the weekend.
Over the weekend, our fearless leader and Bischoff came by to set their deadlift baselines. When are YOU coming by?

Posted by on No, no gratuitous pictures of women’s volleyball shorts. Just wanted to use today’s log entry to announce that Big Jason was off to play a volleyball game (seriously) after testing his deadlift baseline.
Which you should do as well. The deadlift baseline, that is–not play volleyball.
